Just wanted to put this on everyone's radar. I recently received a collection letter from Caine & Weiner, and something about it felt off. It was very vague about who the original creditor was and used language that basically made me afraid to even dispute the debt. Feeling uneasy, I decided to look them up. I found an article that was incredibly eye-opening: Stop Caine & Weiner Debt Collection Harassment It turns out they've been hit with at least two class action lawsuits for doing exactly what I experienced. One lawsuit (Garcia v. Caine & Weiner) was filed over letters that threatened to label disputes "frivolous," which illegally discourage people from exercising their rights. Another (Graham v. Caine & Weiner) was for sending letters that didn't properly identify the original creditor. The article also explained how they operate. Sometimes they act as a "first party" collector, basically pretending to be your original creditor's internal department, and other times they buy the debt as a "third party." Their whole system is designed to be aggressive and confusing. I'm so glad I checked before just paying or panicking. If you've gotten a letter from them that seems vague or threatening, you might have a case for damages under the FDCPA. Don't ignore it, but don't just pay it either. Look into your rights first. Has anyone else dealt with their misleading letters?
