Law Offices of Crystal Moroney, P.C. Calling? Here's My Experience So Far
So I wanted to share what's been happening with me and see if anyone else has gone through something similar with this firm. It started about three weeks ago. I got a call from a number I didn't recognize and let it go to voicemail. The message said it was from the Law Offices of Crystal Moroney, P.C., and that I needed to call them back regarding a "personal matter." They didn't mention anything about a debt or lawsuit in the voicemail, just that I needed to return the call. I didn't call back right away because, honestly, I was nervous. I've read enough stories about people getting tricked into paying debts that aren't theirs or giving out bank info over the phone. So I started doing some digging. Here's what I found about them:
They have an address listed in New City, NY (17 Squadron Boulevard)
There's also another address I saw in North Andover, MA
They seem to be a debt collection law firm
There's a BBB profile for them
The calls kept coming. Sometimes twice a day. They never left detailed messages, just the same generic "call us back" script. That actually made me more suspicious because I feel like a legitimate law firm would send something in writing first, right? I finally broke down and answered one of their calls yesterday. The person on the other end was professional but vague. They said they were calling about an outstanding debt but wouldn't give me many details over the phone. They kept pushing me to verify my identity first - asking for my address, birth date, and last four of my social. I refused to give that info and told them to send me something in writing instead. The caller got a little pushy after that, saying they needed to "resolve this matter quickly" and that I should cooperate. I held my ground and said I needed to see proof of any debt before discussing anything further. They finally agreed to send a letter but it hasn't arrived yet. Honestly, I'm still not sure if this is legit or a scam. Part of me thinks it could be real because they had my phone number and seemed to know my name. But the other part of me is worried about giving them any info if this turns out to be fraudulent. I've been reading up on my rights and it seems like I should:
Wait for that written validation they promised
Not give any personal info over the phone
Keep records of all calls and messages
Possibly send my own debt validation letter by certified mail
But I'm still confused about a few things:
Does anyone know if this firm is actually legitimate?
Has anyone actually been sued by them?
What happens if they can't validate the debt?
Should I get a consumer attorney involved now or wait?
Also, has anyone else noticed they call from different numbers? Sometimes it shows up as a local area code and other times it's a different one. That seems sketchy to me. I've read that if a debt collector falsely claims to be an attorney or uses threatening language, that's a violation of the FDCPA. So far they haven't threatened me directly, but the constant calls are starting to feel like harassment. I'm trying to stay calm and handle this the right way, but it's hard not to feel anxious about it. If anyone has dealt with this firm before or has advice on what to do next, I'd really appreciate hearing your experience. Thanks for letting me vent and ask questions. This whole thing has been stressful and I just want to make sure I'm protecting myself properly.
